Nursing/SEAS/Arch Cannot Enroll in CLAS Classes
Multiple ideas merged. Here's how I merged them.
TITLE OF MERGED IDEA:
Description of merged idea.
PREVENT NURSING STUDENTS FROM BEING RESTRICTED FROM COLLEGE CLASSES:
As of currently, the school of nursing is restricted from registering for classes on sis with the academic group description being College & Graduate Arts & Sciences. Some examples of these classes would be Psychology and Languages. Being a double major for psychology and nursing, I see first hand how greatly this impacts us because by the time that we can sign up for College classes, they are filled. This prevents nursing students from meeting their required general education classes for social sciences and other like courses while we still have flexibility in our schedule Some people may even be prevented taking on another major or minor. This has affected many students in the school of nursing and we would like to get this fixed so that we can sign up for them before they are all full for the coming semester.
ALLOW ENGINEERING STUDENTS INTO COLLEGE HUMANITIES CLASSES!:
The STS classes in the Engineering School are not enough to create a well rounded education for engineers. It is really difficult for engineers to get into Anthropology, Psychology, Economics and Language classes, but it is really important for engineers to broaden their education so that we can broaden our perspectives, which will come into play when applying our engineering education!
CURRY STUDENTS ALSO HAVE A RESTRICTION ON CLAS CLASSES
There has already been a concern raised about Nursing, SEAS, and Architecture students being restricted from CLAS classes, like psychology courses, and I've found that this also applies to Curry students. Can we merge this topic with the already existing one?

Thank you all for your interest in this issue. I have opened works with members from Engineering, Architecture, and Nursing school councils and Student Council representatives to look into this issue further.
I have taken the liberty of merging the two recent ideas (Engineering and Nursing) and will continue to merge all similar ideas. This is because we are all working on the issue together.
Thanks, everyone!

Hey Everyone!
I just wanted to thank you for your patience! We are still in the process of working on this project!
Thanks so much!

I'm in the Curry School of Ed. and I am also finding a restriction with CLAS classes. Could Curry students be included in this issue?

As a summer Orientation leader for the past two years I have strongly advocated for a change to this current situation. I have watched two incoming classes of first year nurses struggle to enroll in almost any courses in which they are interested. I believe that first and second year nurses should have equal opportunity to take classes that fulfill their area requirements (yes, we do have humanities/fine arts/social science etc. requirements) and that blocking nursing students from certain departments has no basis of logical argument.
Just like any other major, I believe CLAS students within a major should have first priority to classes but after that there is no difference between a first year nurse wanting to take Psych and a first year CLAS student wanting to take the same Psych class. In fact, students can enroll in many lower level Nursing courses.
I have brought this issue up with StudCo in the past and would be happy to provide further information on the subject. Thank you SpeakUpUVa for beginning the process of, what hopefully will be, a positive change!

The semester has now begun and I have been told by the professor that he is not allowed to course action people into the class. Enrolling has been opened up to everyone now, however there are hundreds of people on the waiting list for the class.. Has anything yet been raised with the faculty about the issue?

Yes, I have a randomly assigned sign up time like everyone else at UVa. The issue is that some courses, such as many of thse in the commerce school, are school specific and do not accomodate for minors. Social psychology, for example, is restricted for CLAS students until after everyone at UVa has had a chance to register for classes. As it is a popular class, this means it is unlikely there will still be room available in the class by that point and it will most likely have a long waitlist. Raymond may be right that the professor may allow me to course action into the class, but he may also decide not to... Just the idea of a college specific restriction like that frustrates me; I can't understand why any other major other than psychology in the college should have preferntial course selection in a psychology course than those in engineering or architechture.

I believe it's to protect students so everyone is more able to achieve graduation requirements.
My advice is to email the professor of the specific course and if you cannot enroll through sis, course action your way through.

this is a good idea. I took a "Spanish for Engineers" course last semester through the engineering school. It felt like the ultimate bureaucracy-- the engineering school hired a language teacher from an institute in Charlottesville, because UVa couldn't provide a teacher for the class. What's more, the class had to be listed as " special topics in engineering" since we wouldn't have been able to enroll in a class with a SPAN title. I don't like paying so much to be here only to have some of the offerings withheld from me-- this counts for COMM classes as well-- many of these are electives for the business minor, yet e-schoolers can only enroll during the add/drop period.
