SpeakUpUVa
Student life on Grounds is good. Real good. But together, we can make it even better. So, speak up UVA. We’re listening. And so are your fellow Hoos. Use your votes to bump up the ideas that you’re passionate about. It’s like shouting from the Rotunda steps, only better.

Nursing/SEAS/Arch Cannot Enroll in CLAS Classes
Multiple ideas merged. Here's how I merged them.
TITLE OF MERGED IDEA:
Description of merged idea.PREVENT NURSING STUDENTS FROM BEING RESTRICTED FROM COLLEGE CLASSES:
As of currently, the school of nursing is restricted from registering for classes on sis with the academic group description being College & Graduate Arts & Sciences. Some examples of these classes would be Psychology and Languages. Being a double major for psychology and nursing, I see first hand how greatly this impacts us because by the time that we can sign up for College classes, they are filled. This prevents nursing students from meeting… more434 votesunder review ·

Thank you all for your interest in this issue. I have opened works with members from Engineering, Architecture, and Nursing school councils and Student Council representatives to look into this issue further.
I have taken the liberty of merging the two recent ideas (Engineering and Nursing) and will continue to merge all similar ideas. This is because we are all working on the issue together.
Thanks, everyone!

Make housing stop making noise during sleeping hours!!!
Housing at UVA is literally a joke. I have personally had (as well as have had countless students' accounts) so many problems with housing. My biggest concern is the amount of noise due to maintenance and construction on grounds. Why is it necessary to jackhammer the sidewalk at 9 am? I understand that some maintenance is of emergency status and cannot be avoided. However, when housing is using a loud machine to rip bush roots out of the ground in front of my building in order to put down grass so early? Not necessary. Especially during exam time. If we… more

Hire More Math Professors
Although the Math Department has been steadily increasing over the past few years, the Math staff has been inversely decreasing (with professors either retiring or otherwise leaving) and they have not been able to hire any new professors. Fewer classes are being offered and the classes that are offered have hefty waitlists. In accordance with Obama's interest in increasing mathematics and science major graduates (http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2074024,00.html), I hope that UVA can participate in this larger goal. As of now, UVA is not making it any easier to finish a mathematics major.

Fix the Physics Department
The two-semester survey course that engineering students have to sit through is unacceptably poor. The class demonstrations often fail and the professors are sometimes unable to solve their own example problems. Lecture attendance is mandatory via clicker questions -- which wastes time better put towards studying the material independently. The department appears to be running on its own steam, as the professors and their courses do not change year-to-year. Whatever feedback the department is receiving is clearly ineffective. The reputation for poor teaching and abysmally low-quality instruction is not something I would like to see continue, much less fund with… more

Why don't vending machines accept CavAdvantage!?
I am in the Chemistry building now watching a girl kick the vending machines because it won't take her card. I know that the ones in Clark do not accept cards either. The only machines that I have found to actually function correctly are in Wilson. Originally the claim was that they were not working because the "Connection Box" in Garrett had been interrupted. If that is the case, why do the Wilson ones work properly?

WHY SHOULD UNRENOVATED LAMBETH RESIDENTS PAY THE SAME AS RENOVATED?
Second semester of my second year...I learn about this online blog/ bulletin. I should've looked into this sooner!
Anyways, it's the end of the year and they're finally going to complete the renovation in Lambeth. But honestly, why did I have to pay the same amount as those living in brand new apartments with new furniture, new shower curtains that aren't nasty looking, a new stove, new carpet, etc. so unfair!! Am I right? Same thing for first years...I lived in Mccormick with no elevator to haul my heavy fridge into my dorm and out of my dorm... stink bugs… more

Open access to the Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Building after hours
The new new wing of the chemistry building was open 24/7 during the first part of Fall 2011 semester, but they recently closed it to student use after 5:00 PM. WHY? It is a great study area and we should be able to use it all the time.

Names instead of computing IDs!!!!
Computing IDs? What? Why not just your name (e.g., jonathansmith@virginia.edu)? Currently, if I want to email someone, I either, 1) have to try and remember their esoteric computing ID or 2) have to search their name on UVa People Search, which will lead me to their computing ID. Ok, if I wanted to spam someone, I could easily find their email anyways, so why not just make one's name their email address? And don't give me that rebuttal that you can create some alias with @email.virginia.edu. Let's be more professional, like the countless other universities that just use students'… more

Fight Ex-Post-Facto Tuition Raises
Back in March I enrolled in McIntire for the Fall 2012 semester understanding fully that I would be paying an additional $3000 a year in tuition.
Two days ago, I received a notice that the Board of Visitors decided to increase tuition by another $1000 dollars.
That's roughly one and a half months after I accepted my spot.
Can someone please explain to me how it's fair to take advantage of students who are already emotionally and financially invested in a degree, and then raise their tuition for the following semester with no advance notice? I am at a loss.… more10 votesstarted ·

This is an issue that we have been investigating for a while. When someone accepts an offer to attend the University of Virginia they know it will cost a certain amount based on current tuition and can take summer jobs and university jobs to help defray these costs. Unexpectedly large hikes in tuition make it hard especially for these students who are trying to plan ahead. Student Council is already planning discussions on this and other fiscal issues and will be sure that this is brought to administrators attention once again.

Bring back the College Readership Program.
Bring back the College Readership Program. It was fantastic to have had hard copies of the NYT, the Washington Post, etc. available to students at key locations on Grounds. Having such publications available at no cost to the student really fosters awareness of events occurring around the world. It is disappointing that UVA no longer has a program like this.

Give us the whole week off for Thanksgiving
Seriously, if we had 2 more days off of school for Thanksgiving break, I could go home for a full 9 days. Instead I only get 5 days and 2 of those are travel days. I would be willing to go to school 2 days early during the summer and have a longer break.

Steps to back of Thornton parking lot from Stadium Rd
There is an extremely steep, worn, muddy path that many E-schoolers climb up to get to the back of the Thornton E-wing from Stadium Rd. Perhaps stepping stones could be added to make this an easier (and safer in the rain) task.

Decrease courseload
The average UVa student takes 5-6 classes to fulfill the 15-17 credit requirement. Students at other leading universities and colleges (Harvard, Yale, Swarthmore, Amherst, etc.) are only take 4 four-credit classes to fulfill their 16 credit requirements. I transferred from one of these schools, and the 4-credit classes were no harder than our 3-credit ones. If UVa switches to the 4-credit system, students will have more time to focus on their classes and will have more time for extracurricular activities.

Get higher tables at Rice Hall
Its really bad on the back to be leaning forward so much and those tables at Rice promote no work, but rather simply congregation as a result of the low height. If they expect people to have laptops and books on their laps, then that would be inconvenient in the sense that the temperature of the laptops on a person's lap is generally a bad idea.

SIS Notifications
If SIS were to notify you by email or SMS when a new grade was posted, when a class opened, etc., this would save a lot of time and bandwidth.

Increase the bandwidth of the Cavalier/Wahoo Wireless Networks
I've found it EXTREMELY difficult to get dependable wireless coverage in many areas of campus. Even in my dorm (in the Mccormick area), the internet often crashes or is extremely slow. I am unable to video chat and that impedes my ability to catch up with my friends and family back home! In the chemistry building today, too, my internet crashed and I was unable to check emails for a meeting I had scheduled. I understand that it takes a lot of bandwidth to support video chatting and web mail, but if I'm paying so much for tuition and fees,… more

have an online display/app of which machines are available at the gyms?
Similar to the website that shows laundry machine availabilities at on-grounds dorms, this would be really helpful for people who are about to go to the gym but aren't sure how busy it is at a certain time. This would not require much investment and would be very useful to students -- especially an app (maybe within the Virginia app?)

Vandalism in Lambeth Parking Lot
In the last few weeks and months, there has been a surge in vandalism in the Lambeth parking lot.
Confirmed events include:
Spray-painting of the sides and windows of cars (Including mine).
Smashing of windows and mirrors.
And the most recent one: A STOLEN CAR.If windows can be smashed and ENTIRE CARS STOLEN, then what is to say our actual safety is not in peril? These are no longer stolen bike issues, these are dramatic holes in security that are unacceptable. How safe can a young woman feel coming home in the middle of the night, when certainly stealing… more

I think we need better concerts at UVa.
Most other schools are able to attract some really great groups. I think even smaller groups like O.A.R. would get a lot of the student body out.

Put a sidewalk between Rugby Rd and Madison Ln
I know that it isnt Phi Psi's property, so I'm assuming its university property, and its actually treacherous trying to walk across there. Lots of broken glass, rocks, no lights... just not a good situation. If StudCo put a sidewalk in there, it'd be one of the greatest initiatives ever.

I met with Dean Groves today about the issue and am working to figure out who to contact. It’s actually an interesting mix of ownership as far as who owns/manages that land, so I’ll be sifting through the bureaucracy to figure out if this is something we can get done.
More updates later.
