As a student, I would love to see Sustainability issues prioritized. This issue has proven to be increasingly important to students in past years as evidenced by the incredible involvement around grounds an desire to see improvement. This trend will continue exponentially in the years to come and I hope that UVA can catch up to and surpass many of the peer institutions that are currently humiliating us.

Why has the University failed to articulate a clear policy in support of environmentally sustainable investment and proxy voting? Is there a timetable to do it? Are administrators aware of our Darden and McIntire faculty who specialize in environmental finance and sustainability? It seems to me that we're putting ourselves at a huge reputational disadvantage by lagging behind our peers on a matter that makes good financial and social sense...

... and speak of the elephant in the room, why hasn't faculty Senate, or student Council, insisted formally and officially and persistently, that the University's nondiscrimination policies MUST include protection for 'gender identity and expression', and that the policy actually protect sexual and general minority students, faculty, staff, patients, alumni and others from discrimination. The current policy - that at least includes the notion of protection for 'sexual orientation' takes it all back by defining the protection very weakly; that is, if it is legal to discriminate, then its not called discrimination, it is just considered the what the University does things. Moreover, we hear reports that the Virginia Attorney General or his office may be acting to REMOVE even this weak protection. And, in fact, the Virginia Governor has failed - for the first time in decades of Virginia Governors - to protect lgbt persons in his Executive Order. Question: does Student Council support protections for 'sexual orientation' and 'gender identity and expression'? Question: does Faculty Senate support protections for 'sexual orientation' and 'gender identify and expression'? Question: Does the Board of Visitors support protections for 'sexual orientation' and 'gender identify and expression'?

oops ... once again, everyone forgot that staff outnumber both faculty and students, and help faculty and students achieve their goals ... the unexamined racism, classism and misogyny in continually denigrating staff to nothingness is something that ought to be EXAMINED in the March 3rd meeting!

Given the extremely low number of American Indian students at UVa, what steps are being considered by the Commission to increase our recruitment and admittance of Native Americans? Additionally, how does the Commission plan to respond to the recent suggestions put forth by The American Indian Student Union as endorsed by the Cavalier Daily (2/12/10), to institute a Native Studies program at UVa? Does the Committee feel that creating such a program of study would be an effective move toward attracting mor... more
