Student life on Grounds is good. Real good. But together, we can make it even better. So, speak up UVA. We’re listening. And so are your fellow Hoos. Use your votes to bump up the ideas that you’re passionate about. It’s like shouting from the Rotunda steps, only better.

Hire More Math Professors
Although the Math Department has been steadily increasing over the past few years, the Math staff has been inversely decreasing (with professors either retiring or otherwise leaving) and they have not been able to hire any new professors. Fewer classes are being offered and the classes that are offered have hefty waitlists. In accordance with Obama's interest in increasing mathematics and science major graduates (http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2074024,00.html), I hope that UVA can participate in this larger goal. As of now, UVA is not making it any easier to finish a mathematics major.

Put a sidewalk between Rugby Rd and Madison Ln
I know that it isnt Phi Psi's property, so I'm assuming its university property, and its actually treacherous trying to walk across there. Lots of broken glass, rocks, no lights... just not a good situation. If StudCo put a sidewalk in there, it'd be one of the greatest initiatives ever.

I met with Dean Groves today about the issue and am working to figure out who to contact. It’s actually an interesting mix of ownership as far as who owns/manages that land, so I’ll be sifting through the bureaucracy to figure out if this is something we can get done.
More updates later.

Give us the whole week off for Thanksgiving
Seriously, if we had 2 more days off of school for Thanksgiving break, I could go home for a full 9 days. Instead I only get 5 days and 2 of those are travel days. I would be willing to go to school 2 days early during the summer and have a longer break.

Unlock both doors at the top of Nau/Gibson entering from South Lawn.
For a couple years I've been waiting on someone to figure out that both doors at the top of Nau/Gibson need to be unlocked to relieve the traffic bottleneck that happens multiple times each day. Only one opens and it's been this way for quite some time. Let's get this fixed!

Hi Rex, thank you for your post! I will get in contact with someone who can help us get this issue resolved. Getting in and out of Nau and Gibson really can be a hassle sometimes, and it’s important that we make it convenient and fast for people to make their way around Grounds, especially in between classes when everyone is in a rush to get to places on time.

Open access to the Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Building after hours
The new new wing of the chemistry building was open 24/7 during the first part of Fall 2011 semester, but they recently closed it to student use after 5:00 PM. WHY? It is a great study area and we should be able to use it all the time.

Vacuums for dorms
It would be a good idea to have a few vacuums on hand for students (especially first years) to check out and borrow for 10 minutes at a time. They could be stored in the basement of Page or elsewhere, but I find myself (and many others) needing a vacuum. However, to own a vacuum and store it in a dorm takes up too much space and it's a huge inconvenience. Is this possible to start a check out system and have a few on hand?

This issue was brought up at a recent Student Life meeting. We are currently trying to figure out a way to implement this change. We will let you know when we settle on a concrete plan of action. Thanks for speaking up!

SIS Notifications
If SIS were to notify you by email or SMS when a new grade was posted, when a class opened, etc., this would save a lot of time and bandwidth.

Classes restricted to college students
I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY! Why is it that, as a psychology minor, the entire college, regardless of their field of study, has preference over me in my minor to sign up for high demand classes like Social Psychology just because I am in the engineering school? I may never get to take that class! Why are we restricted from so many classes just because someone decided we are different than the other majors? This is not okay!

Thank you for clarifying the registration aspect, I did not know the system worked like that.
Going forward from here, we will work with talking to faculty about ways around to resolve this issue, whether SIS will recognize your major/minor or it will simply become a policy by the schools.Again, thank you for posting and we will work on the issue and get back to you. In the mean time, I do suggest emailing the professor to ask to hold a spot for you as it is your minor.
Thank you,

This is a concern that I would strongly like to look into. There are a few points you will need to help me on first before I can contact the appropriate faculty. Why… more

Saferide needs to have more cars and be more accommodating to visiting students.
I have had saferide screw me over twice within the past few months. First, I called them 5 times and they did not pick up due to a lack of people running the phones, and then after I got through it took them over an hour to pick me up from Lambeth. This is not an exaggeration, even a UVA Policeman came by to check on me and offer me a ride home because I had been waiting in the Lambeth parking lot for so long.
Secondly, I was at UVA over the summer with my girlfriend who attends VT… more38 votesunder review ·

Hi KN,
I think you bring up a serious issue. I have categorized your idea under the Safety and Wellness committee so that the committee chairs can look into it and get back to you with updates.
Thanks for bringing this up! -
IRC/Hereford Loop
The bus route is a great idea but it needs to run more often and past noon. Right now the bus comes once every 30 minutes which sucks if you barely miss it because then you have to wait 30 minutes for the next one. Also, it should run all day instead of just in the morning because students travel in that area all day and it makes it really inconvenient for us.

Increase the bandwidth of the Cavalier/Wahoo Wireless Networks
I've found it EXTREMELY difficult to get dependable wireless coverage in many areas of campus. Even in my dorm (in the Mccormick area), the internet often crashes or is extremely slow. I am unable to video chat and that impedes my ability to catch up with my friends and family back home! In the chemistry building today, too, my internet crashed and I was unable to check emails for a meeting I had scheduled. I understand that it takes a lot of bandwidth to support video chatting and web mail, but if I'm paying so much for tuition and fees,… more

Cutting down the Rotunda magnolias
The administration decided that in the process of renovating the Rotunda they will have to cut down the giant magnolias around it so they can put up scaffolding. While I understand it might make it harder or more expensive to put up the scaffolding I don't understand why they have decided to cut them down considering there's been scaffolding on the Rotunda before. Those trees have been around for almost a hundred years and are an integral part of the Rotunda. I know this has probably been decided at this point, but why did the administration not at least inform… more

EDIT (11/22): President Sullivan recently gave a speech concerning the Rotunda restoration efforts. Below is an excerpt of what she said about the magnolias:
“Some of you also have raised concerns about the recommendation to remove the generations-old magnolia trees that flank the Rotunda. The Board members were informed that the magnolias are at the end of their projected lifespan and were planted too close to the building. Arborists — our own as well as outside experts — believe that the repair work on the Rotunda will only exacerbate the trees’ already fragile state. These are matters that we must consider further.”
For the full speech, please visit http://www.virginia.edu/president/speeches/11/message111120.html.
If you and others are still concerned about the decision to cut down the magnolias, continue your support and StudCo will bring your voice to the administration.

Put up a "No Thru Traffic" Sign on McCormick??
At least once a week, I am riding the bus back to dorms when we get stuck behind a coach bus or a car that doesn't realize it can't drive through the barriers. Why not put up a sign on McCormick Road to let people know that they can not drive through between 7 and 4:30?

Crosswalk across Stadium Rd. to E-School
When Stadium Road was recently repaved, the cross walk across the road from Montebello Circle to the back of Olsson/Thornton/Rice was not repainted. Can we get that repainted? A lot of people cross there and cars do not stop.

Thank you for your post. You make a really good point, and I will definitely bring this up at the next StudCo General Body Meeting, or get in contact with someone who can help us get this issue solved as soon as possible. There has certainly been a lot of construction going on around Grounds, especially this fall. However, we need to remember, safety first!! A lot of people use those paths, and it is certainly something that can become an even bigger issue during high-traffic hours.

Better Housing Assigning Process
I feel like the "lottery" system is just a terrible way for housing to assign rooms. It should be done in a fairer way, such as those with demonstrated financial need (i.e. students who can't afford to live off grounds) and then by year with such factors as if you've lived on grounds each year, etc etc. Right now it's up in the air that i'll have housing next year, my final year, and in a worst case scenario (not getting housing), I might have to drop out.

Outlets in Olsson 120
I see that you say that Student Council isn't the correct forum for this type of issue, so who should I talk to? There are no outlets that are useful for students in Olsson 120. For one of my classes, my teacher said that he would have allowed our computers (access to collab) for our exams but it was impossible without the proper outlets in Olsson 120. This is a heavily used classroom and I know power strips/outlets would be regularly used.
